Dallas has brought guard Dennis Smith Jr. back on a one-year training-camp contract, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line. With 14 guaranteed deals already in place, the 30-year-old is not expected to secure one of the club’s 15 regular-season roster spots. The arrangement is largely designed to obtain his G League rights; if waived, Smith is projected to join the Texas Legends. The No. 9 pick in the 2017 draft last appeared in the NBA during the 2023-24 season.
Heat
The Heat announced that Tyler Herro will miss roughly eight weeks after surgery on his left ankle. Dr. Thomas San Giovanni performed the procedure to address posterior impingement syndrome, with Miami’s team physicians assisting. Herro, 25, averaged 23.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.5 assists on 47 percent shooting in his first All-Star campaign. The timeline leaves his availability for the start of the 2024-25 season in doubt, though he is not expected to be sidelined for the entire year. Miami reshaped its roster this offseason by adding Norman Powell and Simone Fontecchio while moving Kevin Love, Kyle Anderson, Duncan Robinson and Haywood Highsmith. The club is also shopping guard Terry Rozier, who is under federal investigation related to gambling.
Grizzlies
Memphis forward/center Jaren Jackson Jr. said his recovery from turf toe surgery is progressing on schedule, though his status for opening night remains uncertain. “I’m progressing the right way,” he told Grind City Media. “Every day has been a building block.” Jackson, 25, averaged 19.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 65 games last season.
