The Dallas Mavericks have told forward Khris Middleton that the choice of a buyout is in his hands, league insider Marc Stein reported. Dallas is prepared to negotiate a separation or carry the 34-year-old through the remainder of the season.
Middleton, a three-time All-Star from 2019–22, delivered a season-best 25 points, seven rebounds and seven assists against the Indiana Pacers on Sunday. Team officials have informed him they expect to need additional shooting this summer, leaving open the possibility of an extended partnership beyond the 2025-26 campaign.
If the veteran seeks a buyout, the move must be completed before March 1 for him to remain playoff-eligible with a new club. He would be barred from signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors or New York Knicks because of apron restrictions and would give up his Bird rights ahead of free agency.
Mavericks: Irving Nearing Practice Work
Dallas remains optimistic that Kyrie Irving, sidelined by a torn ACL, will participate in one or two full-speed practices before the regular season concludes. The Mavericks have several multi-day breaks in late March and early April that could accommodate the workouts.
Kings: Sabonis Watch Continues
The Sacramento Kings explored trading Domantas Sabonis before the deadline, but an offseason move is not guaranteed, according to league sources. The decision may depend on draft-lottery results and the club’s eventual selection. The Toronto Raptors have been linked to Sabonis in the past, while the Washington Wizards shifted course after acquiring Anthony Davis.
Warriors: Porzingis Still Adjusting
The Golden State Warriors were hopeful that Kristaps Porzingis would settle in smoothly after the deadline, yet the 7-foot-3 forward continues to manage postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. His long-term status with the franchise remains unsettled.
