The NBA outlined its most detailed roadmap yet for a stand-alone European competition at the Sports Business Journal Dealmakers conference, with deputy commissioner Mark Tatum saying the league is aiming for a fall 2027 tip-off.

Speaking to reporters, Tatum said permanent franchises are expected in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkey and Greece. He cited renowned sports brands such as Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich and LDLC ASVEL as potential entrants.

The NBA is in talks with multiple investors, Tatum noted, and the final makeup could blend existing basketball clubs, soccer organizations forming new teams, and entirely new entities built from the ground up.

Tatum described the concept as “almost like the Champions League of basketball,” suggesting global soccer powers Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan could eventually field basketball squads.

Licensing is a pivotal factor. Many EuroLeague teams have agreements that expire after the 2025-26 season; those that decline extensions would be free to join the NBA’s venture once their contracts lapse.

Formal approval from NBA governors is still required, but Tatum characterized it as a matter of scheduling rather than uncertainty. If green-lighted, franchise bidding could open in the first quarter of 2026.

The inaugural 2027 season is planned as a reduced play-in campaign, allowing clubs from nations such as Lithuania, Serbia and Croatia to compete for full-time spots in 2028-29.

The NBA believes a strong European league would help keep elite prospects closer to home while providing top-level development and competitive salaries. Tatum said the objective is for NBA Europe to be the world’s second-best league, covering players ranked 450 through 900 globally.

Preseason tournaments pitting NBA and NBA Europe teams could begin immediately after launch, and the NBA Cup could eventually feature European qualifiers. Tatum floated marquee matchups such as the Knicks versus PSG and the Lakers against Real Madrid.

The deputy commissioner summarized the initiative succinctly: the NBA is not merely placing a flag in Europe but building “a second league to match the first.”
