The Atlanta Hawks are evaluating a plan to offer CJ McCollum a one-year contract extension worth roughly $20 million once his trade from the Washington Wizards is finalized, Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoops Journal reported.
McCollum, 34, is headed to Atlanta along with forward Corey Kispert in the agreement that will send All-Star guard Trae Young to Washington. The veteran guard is entering the final season of his current deal and is scheduled to earn $30.67 million in 2025-26.
Since entering the NBA in 2013, McCollum has never reached unrestricted free agency, signing multiple extensions with his previous teams. It is unclear whether he intends to test the open market in 2026 or accept a short-term arrangement with Atlanta.
The Hawks reportedly view McCollum as a secondary ball-handler and scorer who can play on or off the ball, a skill set they believe will complement their young roster as the team transitions after Young’s departure.
Before the trade, McCollum started Washington’s first 35 games this season and averaged 18.8 points, 3.6 assists and 3.5 rebounds while shooting efficiently across all categories.
A one-year extension would allow Atlanta to remain competitive while preserving long-term salary flexibility, an approach the franchise is said to favor.
