The NBA and FIBA will start meeting with prospective European clubs and ownership groups in January, taking the next step toward launching a new pan-European basketball league, the organizations announced Monday.
The proposed competition will feature permanent franchises while also offering annual entry through two merit-based avenues: qualification via FIBA’s Basketball Champions League or a post-season qualifying tournament. Officials said the schedule will be coordinated with domestic leagues and national-team windows to ensure players remain available for international events.
Both governing bodies pledged financial backing for Europe’s basketball infrastructure, including support for domestic circuits, club academies and ongoing NBA and FIBA development initiatives for players, coaches and game officials.
“Our conversations with various stakeholders in Europe have reinforced our belief that an enormous opportunity exists around the creation of a new league on the continent,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in the release. “Together with FIBA, we look forward to engaging prospective clubs and ownership groups that share our vision for the game’s potential in Europe.”

Referee Eric Lewis Assigned to G League
Veteran official Eric Lewis has been reinstated as a G League referee, ESPN’s Marc J. Spears reported. Lewis abruptly retired in 2023 after the NBA determined he violated its social-media policy by operating a burner Twitter account that defended officials. “I’m excited about earning people’s trust back and getting back to the game,” Lewis said, adding that his long-term goal remains a return to NBA courts.
Further details on the European league timeline and structure are expected to emerge after the NBA and FIBA complete their January meetings with interested parties.
