NBA remains non-committal on expansion draft schedule

The NBA has not set a firm timetable for an expansion draft, league sources told reporter Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.
The Board of Governors has authorized the league office to study possible new franchises in Seattle and Las Vegas, but team executives cited by Fischer said it is “premature” to anticipate an expansion draft as early as June 2028.
Commissioner Adam Silver reiterated that the entire process is still exploratory. Speaking recently, Silver said the NBA hopes to decide whether to expand by the end of this calendar year, with a long-standing internal goal of reaching resolution by 2026.
“There is absolutely a chance expansion may not happen,” Silver noted. “It’s also possible we could expand to one market, maybe two, or no markets.” He added that interested parties should contact the league or its financial adviser, PJT Partners, stressing that “there’s been no handshakes, no commitments.”
