All 30 NBA franchises sent evaluators to the Big 12 men’s basketball tournament this week, drawn by a 2026 draft class that league insiders describe as one of the deepest in recent memory. Ten players projected as first-round picks in ESPN’s latest mock draft appeared in Kansas City, accelerating front-office traffic throughout the event, according to ESPN reporters Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps.

“We’re so interested in this draft because it’s so deep. There’s a lot of impact players,” an Eastern Conference scout said. A Western Conference counterpart added, “Next year’s draft isn’t looking so good… this year is like a double draft.”

Five First-Round Talents Highlight Big 12 Final

Saturday’s championship game between Houston and Arizona will feature five projected first-rounders: Houston’s Kingston Flemings and Chris Cenac Jr. and Arizona’s Brayden Burries, Koa Peat and Motiejus Krivas. Multiple evaluators likened Flemings, No. 5 in ESPN’s projection, to former MVP Derrick Rose. “Derrick could turn the corner and get a clean layup—you don’t see that often, and Kingston has that,” another East scout told ESPN.

Peterson vs. Dybantsa for No. 1

The consensus around the league, per Windhorst and Bontemps, is that Kansas guard Darryn Peterson and BYU forward AJ Dybantsa have separated from the pack as the leading candidates for the top pick. “Talent-wise, he’s clearly No. 1,” an East scout said of Peterson. A second East executive countered, “I think Dybantsa is the easy No. 1… he’s special.”

Boozer, Wilson Form Next Tier

Duke’s Cameron Boozer and North Carolina’s Caleb Wilson are viewed as the next two prospects, slotted in either order at Nos. 3 and 4. While some scouts note athletic questions surrounding Boozer, others insist he still belongs in the No. 1 conversation. “Boozer has always been the best player at every level, and that can help overcome some of his athletic questions,” a second East executive said.

Additional First-Round Names

Illinois guard Keaton Wagler, Arkansas guard Darius Acuff Jr. and Louisville guard Mikel Brown Jr. are also projected within the top nine. “The guy who is most ready to play in the NBA is Acuff,” one East executive said. “If you didn’t know anything other than watching him play, you’d think he was a four-year player; that’s how smooth he is.”

Peterson Details Season-Long Cramping Issues

Peterson, who has missed 11 games with various injuries, told the Kansas City Star he battled severe cramping episodes dating back to last September, including one that required hospitalization for IV fluids. “I had a full-body cramp—super serious,” he said, calling the incident “traumatic.” The freshman guard said he frequently asked to be removed from games this season because of recurring cramps but now feels physically improved. “I’m just glad I’m feeling better,” he added.

The 2026 draft is scheduled for June 25, 2026.
