The NBA said Thursday that its investigation into the Milwaukee Bucks and forward Giannis Antetokounmpo is still underway, with several key points yet to be resolved.
In a statement shared by ESPN’s Shams Charania, a league spokesperson noted that “certain facts remain in dispute” regarding Antetokounmpo’s medical status and the team’s management of his return-to-play plan.
According to the league, Milwaukee scheduled the two-time MVP for three-on-three scrimmages last week, but he chose not to participate. The spokesperson added that the sides disagree over whether the Bucks asked Antetokounmpo to join a group workout earlier this week.
Antetokounmpo has been out since March 15 with a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise. Despite the official injury designation, he has repeatedly said he feels ready. “I’m available to play right now,” he told reporters earlier this week. “I don’t know what game is being played right here.”
The Bucks maintain that Antetokounmpo is not yet cleared for game action. The league’s review is examining, in part, potential violations of the NBA’s player participation policy and whether the team accurately communicated his status.
