The Toronto Raptors are adding free-agent center Mo Bamba on a one-year, non-guaranteed contract, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Sportsnet’s Blake Murphy reported that the agreement comes as the club awaits a medical update on starting center Jakob Poeltl, who has missed time with injuries this season.

Cap specialist Keith Smith of Spotrac noted that the signing moves Toronto approximately $475,000 above the NBA’s first tax apron and about $2.1 million over the luxury-tax line. Smith added that the front office is expected to make additional transactions before season’s end to avoid a tax bill.

With Poeltl unavailable at times, head coach Darko Rajaković has leaned on Sandro Mamukelashvili for frontcourt minutes. Bamba, listed at 7-feet tall with a 7-10 wingspan, offers a different profile as a rim protector and rebounder.

The 27-year-old was selected sixth overall by Orlando in the 2018 draft and spent four and a half seasons with the Magic. Over seven NBA seasons, he has averaged 6.8 points and 5.4 rebounds in 18.2 minutes per game.

Earlier this year, Bamba appeared in 14 games for the G League’s Salt Lake City Stars, posting 16.5 points, 11.9 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per contest.
