Tracy McGrady Says Karl-Anthony Towns Needs Greater “Want-To” for Knicks to Thrive

Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady believes the New York Knicks will only unlock Karl-Anthony Towns’ full potential if the All-Star center shows more determination on the court.

Speaking with host Adam Schein on the Schein Time podcast released March 26, 2026, McGrady said Towns possesses every physical and technical tool necessary to dominate but questioned the player’s motivation.

“He’s just gotta have the want-to,” McGrady stated. “If he takes that approach, that mentality, nobody can guard KAT.”

Elite skills, inconsistent impact

McGrady highlighted Towns’ rare versatility—scoring inside and out, passing and finishing at the rim—yet noted that the 28-year-old’s production has fluctuated this season. While Towns continues to post strong statistics, McGrady argued the big man has not consistently placed “his stamp on these games.”

Knicks’ identity also questioned

The former scoring champion extended his critique to the entire roster, saying New York no longer exhibits the defensive edge that defined last year’s squad. “I think what’s wrong with the Knicks is they lost their identity,” McGrady told Schein, suggesting the team must rediscover that mindset before the postseason.

New York sits in a crowded Eastern Conference race while trying to integrate Towns, acquired in a high-profile trade last offseason. With the playoffs approaching, McGrady’s comments add pressure on both the three-time All-Star and his new club to respond quickly.
