Dallas — Head coach Jason Kidd singled out rookie forward Cooper Flagg’s toughness as the quality that has emerged most clearly during the Dallas Mavericks’ first two preseason games. “His willingness to compete at a high level and his willingness to be uncomfortable … those are his superpowers,” Kidd said, noting that the No. 1 overall pick “is all about winning.”
Kidd also praised second-year center Dereck Lively II, emphasizing the duo’s potential impact both long term and immediately. “It’s not about how many shots he gets or how many minutes or how many times he touches the ball,” Kidd said of Flagg. “He’s about the team.”
Finding rhythm with Anthony Davis
Flagg, who has started alongside newly acquired forward Anthony Davis, said developing on-court chemistry remains his top priority. “I gotta find ways to help AD more,” he told reporters after Saturday’s 120-116 loss to Charlotte. “That’s what the preseason is for … for us to come out and get those real game minutes together and gel.”
Rebounding becomes early concern
While Dallas is comfortable with Flagg experimenting as a playmaker—he committed five turnovers against the Hornets—the staff is more concerned about rebounding. Charlotte held a 54-37 edge on the glass, a margin Kidd called unacceptable for a front line featuring Flagg, Davis and Lively. The coach said rebounding will be a point of emphasis for the remainder of the exhibition schedule, especially because the jumbo lineup may trade shooting for size.
Ownership eyes 2026 trip to China
Team governor Patrick Dumont attended Sunday’s Nets-Suns game in Macao as part of broader efforts to strengthen the NBA’s relationship with China. According to the Dallas Morning News, Dumont believes there is a strong possibility the Mavericks will play games in China during the 2026 preseason.
