Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving told viewers on a recent Twitch stream that his recovery from left ACL surgery is progressing smoothly, saying he is “healing up great.”

The nine-time All-Star, 33, suffered the injury in early March and underwent surgery shortly afterward. Speaking on Aug. 26—exactly five months post-operation—Irving said he has increased his workload in the gym but declined to detail specific drills, stressing the importance of “incremental growth.”

Before the season-ending setback, Irving had assumed primary ball-handling duties following the trade of Luka Dončić and averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists across 50 games while shooting .473/.401/.916.

Irving became a free agent this summer by opting out of a $43 million player option, then re-signed with Dallas on a three-year, $118.5 million contract.

In April, team officials expressed optimism that the guard could return early in 2026, and president of basketball operations Nico Harrison said in July that Irving is ahead of schedule. Both Harrison and Irving have cautioned, however, that there is no guarantee the veteran will be fully recovered before the end of the 2025-26 regular season. “I just want to be back 150,000 percent better,” Irving said in July.

While Irving rehabs, Dallas plans to rely on backcourt options D’Angelo Russell, Brandon Williams, Dante Exum and Jaden Hardy, with frontcourt players Anthony Davis and rookie Cooper Flagg expected to initiate more of the offense.
