Mavericks to Waive Guard Tyus Jones Before Sunday Deadline

The Dallas Mavericks plan to release veteran point guard Tyus Jones prior to the end of the day Sunday, a move that will keep the 29-year-old eligible for the postseason with another club.

Jones, an 11-year NBA veteran, owns career averages of 7.3 points, 4.3 assists and just 0.8 turnovers in 20.7 minutes over 738 regular-season games with Minnesota, Memphis, Washington, Phoenix, Orlando and Dallas. He is widely regarded for his ball security and playmaking.

After four-season stints with both the Timberwolves and Grizzlies, Jones has changed teams four times in the past three years. He began the current season in Orlando on a one-year, $7 million contract but posted only 3.1 points and 2.6 assists per game while shooting .349/.281/.875 in a reserve role.

Orlando shipped Jones to Dallas at the trade deadline in a salary-dump deal that moved the Magic below the luxury-tax threshold. Although the Mavericks had shown interest in signing him last summer, the guard now prefers to join a playoff contender, prompting the buyout.

Releasing Jones will create an opening on Dallas’s 15-man roster. League sources indicate the club is likely to convert two-way guard Ryan Nembhard to a standard contract. Nembhard has appeared in 44 games—six shy of the 50-game limit for two-way players—and has been inactive since Feb. 5. A conversion would remove that cap and allow Dallas to add another two-way player before the March 4 signing deadline.

Forward Khris Middleton is also considered a buyout possibility in Dallas, with the Denver Nuggets among the teams monitoring his status.
