Mavericks have held no extension talks with GM Nico Harrison amid early-season unrest

The Dallas Mavericks have not opened negotiations on a contract extension with general manager Nico Harrison, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon reported. Harrison is under contract for two more years, but his long-term status is in question as the club starts 0-2 and discontent grows among supporters.

During Friday’s 117-107 loss to the Washington Wizards at American Airlines Center, fans repeatedly shouted “Fire Nico!”—the second straight game in which the chant was heard. Frustration has lingered since the February trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The organization briefly rekindled optimism in June by winning the draft lottery and selecting Duke forward Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick. Two games into the season, however, Dallas ranks last in offensive efficiency at 95.5 points per 100 possessions and has committed 37 turnovers.

Head coach Jason Kidd, who received a multiyear extension before the season after the Mavericks blocked interest from the New York Knicks, asked for patience. “It’s a different team,” Kidd told reporters. “We’re learning each other. Fans have the right to express themselves. That doesn’t stop us from coming to work tomorrow and getting better.”

The contrast between Kidd’s new deal and Harrison’s uncertain future has drawn additional attention. MacMahon noted that no discussions about extending the GM who hired Kidd have taken place.

Centerpiece acquisition Anthony Davis labeled the team’s issues “correctable,” citing self-inflicted mistakes. Davis posted 27 points and 13 rebounds against Washington but also had five turnovers. Rookie Flagg added 18 points and praised the crowd’s late-game energy, while veteran guard Klay Thompson conceded, “We deserve the criticism. We’re the ones out there making it happen.” Davis said his concern level is “zero,” emphasizing the length of the season and confidence in defensive improvement.

For now, Dallas remains winless, the fan base is restless, and Harrison’s future remains unsettled without an extension on the table.
