The Dallas Mavericks have entered the summer with one pressing task: appointing a full-time head of basketball operations.

Owner Patrick Dumont has not filled the position since parting ways with Nico Harrison in November. Until a permanent executive is chosen, front-office duties are being handled on an interim basis by Matt Riccardi and Michael Finley.

The vacancy sits atop a pivotal moment for the franchise. Dallas recently completed a high-profile trade that sent Anthony Davis elsewhere and returned multiple draft picks, reshaping the team’s long-term planning. The Mavericks are now constructing their roster around No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg and are positioned to add another lottery selection in the highly regarded 2026 draft.

Young contributors such as Dereck Lively II and Max Christie give the club a developmental core, while veterans Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson provide experienced options that could either stay in Dallas or be moved, depending on the strategy set by the next basketball operations leader.

Dumont’s choice is expected to determine the franchise’s direction across personnel moves, draft strategy and salary-cap management, making the hire the organization’s top off-season priority.
