The Dallas Mavericks have begun scouting locations for a new arena project, signaling they are unlikely to extend their American Airlines Center lease past 2031.
According to people familiar with the team’s plans, ownership is searching for roughly 50 acres to accommodate a basketball venue surrounded by a large-scale commercial development that could feature a luxury hotel. Former Golden State Warriors executive Rick Welts, who oversaw construction of the Chase Center in San Francisco, has been hired to guide the effort.
Securing that amount of land inside Dallas city limits—particularly downtown—has proven difficult, prompting the club to examine suburban alternatives. The city of Irving currently ranks as a leading option, aided by property the franchise already controls in the area. However, discussions about incorporating potential casino elements at the site introduce legal and political hurdles in Texas.
Despite those challenges, the Mavericks still prefer to remain in Dallas, sources said, and will continue evaluating parcels both inside and outside the city as the 2031 deadline approaches.
