The Dallas Mavericks have signed head coach Jason Kidd to a new multiyear contract extension, the club announced on Wednesday.
Team owner Patrick Dumont and general manager Nico Harrison finalized the agreement, which keeps the 52-year-old coach under contract beyond the two seasons that remained on his previous deal. Specific terms were not disclosed.
Official Statement
“I’m grateful for the belief that Patrick and Nico have in me, and the trust we’ve built while working together to construct a team that Dallas can be proud of,” Kidd said in a statement released by the Mavericks. “It’s even more special that I can continue to coach the team that drafted me and where I was able to win a title as a player. I’m looking forward to what’s ahead and continuing to work toward bringing another championship back to Dallas.”
Background and Recent Interest
Reports of the Mavericks’ intention to secure Kidd surfaced in early July, and multiple outlets indicated the franchise wanted the extension completed before the regular season. The New York Knicks requested permission to interview Kidd for their head-coaching vacancy earlier this summer, but Dallas declined. New York later hired Mike Brown.
Coaching Tenure
Kidd took over the Mavericks bench ahead of the 2021-22 campaign after previous head-coaching stints in Brooklyn and Milwaukee and a period as an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers. Dallas reached the Western Conference Finals in his first season and advanced to the 2024 NBA Finals, where the club fell to Boston. Injuries and the mid-season trade of Luka Dončić contributed to the Mavericks missing the playoffs last year.
Looking Ahead
Dallas used this year’s lottery pick to select top prospect Cooper Flagg, who is expected to develop under Kidd’s guidance for the foreseeable future.
