The Dallas Mavericks plan to release veteran point guard Tyus Jones on Sunday, according to reporter Marc Stein. Completing the move before the end of the day keeps Jones eligible to join another team for the upcoming postseason.
Jones, 29, is in his 11th NBA season and has earned a reputation as a reliable reserve who efficiently manages an offense. Across 738 regular-season appearances with Minnesota, Memphis, Washington, Phoenix, Orlando and Dallas, he has averaged 7.3 points and 4.3 assists in 20.7 minutes while committing just 0.8 turnovers per game.
Letting go of Jones opens a roster spot for Dallas and provides the guard an opportunity to seek a playoff role elsewhere. Stein added that the Mavericks are expected to convert Ryan Nembhard’s two-way contract into a standard NBA deal to fill the vacancy.
