The Dallas Mavericks are expected to finalize a new contract with forward PJ Washington once he becomes extension-eligible on Friday, league sources told The Stein Line.

Negotiations are anticipated to center on a deal worth about $90 million, a figure that would secure the 27-year-old in Dallas despite the club’s already congested frontcourt.

Dallas’ depth chart features No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg, returning star Anthony Davis, emerging center Dereck Lively II, newly extended Daniel Gafford and veteran Dwight Powell. Forwards Naji Marshall and Caleb Martin add further competition for minutes, yet team executives view Washington as a long-term fixture rather than a trade asset, according to league chatter.

General manager Nico Harrison has publicly expressed confidence that Washington can complement Flagg, and a new agreement would effectively keep Washington in a Mavericks uniform through the season. NBA rules restrict players who receive raises above 20 percent in the first year of an extension from being traded until at least six months after the deal is signed.

Since arriving in Dallas, Washington has solidified his case for a sizable commitment. He started 57 games last season, averaging 14.7 points, a career-best 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 blocks while shooting 38.1 percent from three-point range. During the Mavericks’ 2024 run to the NBA Finals, he contributed 13.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per postseason contest and converted critical free throws that helped eliminate the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals.

Should the expected agreement be reached, Washington would join Flagg, Davis and the rest of Dallas’ crowded frontcourt in training camp with his future in Dallas secured.
