The Dallas Mavericks are expected to wait until the offseason before engaging in serious trade discussions involving veteran big man Anthony Davis, The Athletic reported.

Despite a 10-16 start, team officials have signaled an intention to remain competitive, sources told reporter Christian Clark. Several rival executives said they believe Dallas will keep Davis past the February trade deadline and revisit potential deals once the season ends.

League observers think the Mavericks want to use the remaining schedule to boost the 10-time All-Star’s market value after he missed significant portions of the past two campaigns with adductor and calf injuries.

Davis, who turns 33 in March, is earning $54.1 million this season. His contract guarantees $58.5 million for 2024-25 and includes a $62.8 million player option for the 2027-28 season.

Acquired from the Los Angeles Lakers in last season’s blockbuster deal featuring Luka Doncic, Davis has played only 20 games for Dallas. He is averaging 20.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.0 steal and 1.9 blocks in those appearances.

For now, patience appears to be the Mavericks’ prevailing approach as the trade deadline approaches.
