Dallas Mavericks forward Anthony Davis practiced with the team on Wednesday and is expected to be listed as questionable for Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers, head coach Jason Kidd told reporters.

The Mavericks have two nights off before beginning a back-to-back at Crypto.com Arena—Friday against the Lakers and Saturday against the Los Angeles Clippers. Team officials confirmed Davis will be cleared for only one of the two contests as he continues to recover from the left calf strain that has sidelined him since Oct. 29.

“That’s a real question? You know what game I want to play,” Davis said with a smile when asked which matchup he prefers. The final decision will rest with the Mavericks’ medical and coaching staffs after gauging how the 30-year-old feels during Thursday’s workout.

Davis has yet to appear at Crypto.com Arena as a Maverick and is eager to face his former team. Team owner Patrick Dumont has urged a cautious approach, delaying a return that Davis initially hoped would happen sooner.

Dallas has struggled in his absence, posting a 5-14 record and dropping 11 of its last 14 games. Davis played only five times before the injury. The club has also been without guards Kyrie Irving and Dante Exum, while rookie center Dereck Lively II deals with foot and knee issues.

Even a limited return from Davis during the Los Angeles trip would provide a significant boost for a roster searching for stability.
