Mavericks’ Anthony Davis Faces Possible Hand Surgery, Still Featured in Trade Discussions

Dallas Mavericks forward-center Anthony Davis is weighing surgery to repair ligament damage in his left hand, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. A procedure would sideline the 10-time All-Star for several months and could effectively end his 2023-24 regular season.
Despite the injury, Dallas has reopened trade conversations with several clubs that previously showed interest, sources told Charania. Any team pursuing Davis is expected to view him as a longer-term asset, hoping for a potential playoff return and contributions beyond this year.
Davis was hurt late in the fourth quarter of last Thursday’s road loss to the Utah Jazz when his hand bent backward while he defended Lauri Markkanen. Follow-up exams confirmed ligament damage, prompting Davis to seek multiple medical opinions before deciding between surgical and non-surgical options. Surgery is considered the lengthier recovery route.
Durability questions, age and a max contract worth $54.1 million this season have already complicated Davis’s market value, and an extended absence could further limit what Dallas receives in any deal. The veteran has also been reported to want an extension.
With former general manager Nico Harrison no longer with the organization, roster decisions now fall to interim executives Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi. The Atlanta Hawks and Toronto Raptors remain the most frequently mentioned suitors; league insiders view Atlanta as the more plausible destination, though salary-matching constraints narrow the available trade packages ahead of the Feb. 5 deadline.
