The Dallas Mavericks formally introduced head coach Jason Kidd’s staff for the 2025-26 NBA season on September 8, detailing a mix of new hires and returning assistants in an afternoon press release.

Key additions

Frank Vogel takes the role of associate head coach after serving last season as a coaching consultant in Dallas. The former Lakers, Pacers, Magic and Suns head coach guided Los Angeles to the 2020 championship.

Jay Triano, an assistant with Sacramento the past three years and a former head coach in Toronto and Phoenix, is slated to be Kidd’s second-in-command.

Popeye Jones, 55, reunites with Kidd—his teammate during two seasons in Dallas—as the No. 3 assistant with a defensive focus. Jones has logged assistant stops with Brooklyn, Indiana, Philadelphia and Denver since 2007.

Phil Handy, whose coaching résumé includes championship runs with Cleveland, Toronto and the Lakers, joins after stints with all three clubs.

Mike Penberthy, regarded league-wide as a shooting coach and most recently on Denver’s staff, also arrives in Dallas. Lakers star Anthony Davis has publicly praised Penberthy’s work.

Dru Anthrop follows Vogel from Phoenix, where he was an assistant in 2023-24. His background features video and player-development roles with Orlando, Memphis and Los Angeles.

Jordan Sears returns to the organization after two seasons as head coach of the G League affiliate Dallas Legends. He previously served as the Mavericks’ head video coordinator (2021-23) and worked in Milwaukee’s video department from 2019-21.

Staff members staying on

Assistants Eric Hughes, Josh Broghamer and Keith Veney will continue on Kidd’s bench, the club confirmed.

The full coaching roster was released via the team’s official channels Monday afternoon.
