Report: Mark Cuban Regains Clout Amid Mavericks Front-Office Upheaval

Mark Cuban has re-emerged as a key voice inside the Dallas Mavericks following months of internal friction that culminated in the exit of president of basketball operations Nico Harrison, ESPN reported.

In a story by ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, more than a dozen team employees described a power struggle that began after Cuban sold controlling interest in the franchise to casino heiress Miriam Adelson and her son-in-law Patrick Dumont in late 2023. Cuban retained 27 percent of the club and hoped to keep steering basketball decisions, but Dumont quickly established himself as the final authority.

Shift in Authority

“Mark is a friend. I will consult him from time to time,” Dumont told the basketball operations staff, according to ESPN. “But make no mistake. I am the governor of the team and I am making decisions.”

The change was welcomed by Harrison and head coach Jason Kidd, who viewed Cuban’s involvement as counterproductive. Yet sources close to Cuban told ESPN he never expected Harrison—hired from Nike in 2021—to run the department unchecked and doubted the executive’s readiness for the role.

When Harrison arrived, Cuban still held final say and brought in veteran executive Dennis Lindsey to fill gaps in the front office. After the sale closed and Lindsey departed for the Detroit Pistons, Harrison began reporting directly to Dumont and pressed for a workspace free of Cuban’s “fingerprints,” one source said. “Dude, I do not want to deal with Mark anymore. He is too much,” Harrison reportedly told colleagues.

Rising Tensions

Harrison blamed Cuban for letting Jalen Brunson walk in free agency and for the ill-fated trade for Christian Wood. His case was strengthened by deadline deals for P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford and the club’s unexpected march to the NBA Finals. Still, one team official labeled the success “fools’ gold,” ESPN noted.

Team sources told ESPN that Harrison selectively informed Dumont, while Cuban maintained his own communication channels with ownership. When the Mavericks won the draft lottery but the roster began to falter, Cuban’s warnings gained traction.

The Luka Doncic Flashpoint

The decisive moment came when Harrison persuaded Dumont to trade superstar Luka Doncic, arguing that a projected $345 million contract was risky given the player’s conditioning and recurring calf injuries. Harrison also advised keeping the plan from Cuban, fearing a leak.

Cuban publicly opposed the move, and as Dallas’ offense slipped toward the bottom of the league, Dumont initiated a leadership change. Cuban’s relationship with ownership remained intact, and he has since joined Dumont’s inner circle alongside Kidd, Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi. One staff member told ESPN that Cuban “is walking around on air… floating in his Skechers,” describing his renewed optimism.

A source characterized Cuban’s current status as that of a consultant rather than the ultimate decision-maker, but his influence inside the Mavericks has undeniably rebounded.
