Malik Beasley says he wants to stay in Detroit, but his return depends on Pistons’ next move

Guard Malik Beasley reiterated on Sunday that he hopes to re-sign with the Detroit Pistons, even as the organization weighs its options following an offseason pivot.

“It’s definitely a place I want to be,” Beasley told reporters after Detroit’s playoff exit against the New York Knicks. “To play in my mom’s hometown and in front of this city means a lot.”

The 27-year-old enjoyed a standout first season in Detroit, knocking down more than 300 three-pointers — only the fifth player in league history to reach that mark — and finishing second in Sixth Man of the Year voting. Coaches and teammates also praised his veteran influence on one of the NBA’s youngest rosters.

Detroit initially planned to offer a three-year, $42 million contract, but the front office changed course once a federal investigation into alleged gambling activity involving Beasley became public. In quick succession, the Pistons signed free agent Caris LeVert and completed a sign-and-trade for Duncan Robinson, filling wing minutes that might have gone to Beasley.

Limited cap options

Because the Pistons hold Beasley’s Non-Bird rights, they can still bring him back at a starting salary up to approximately $7.2 million. A four-year deal under that exception would total roughly $31 million, far below the figure previously on the table.

Detroit currently has 13 guaranteed contracts plus forward Javonte Green on a partial guarantee, leaving two open roster spots. Beasley’s attorney, Steve Haney, said the guard “would like to be considered” for one of those slots if a viable financial pathway emerges.

Market interest elsewhere

The Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks have each checked on Beasley’s availability, according to league sources. However, New York has since filled its training-camp roster with veteran shooters Landry Shamet, Malcolm Brogdon and Garrison Mathews, narrowing external opportunities.

For now, the Pistons control the next move. Whether they circle back to Beasley or proceed with their current depth chart will determine if the sharpshooter gets the encore in Detroit he says he wants.
