The Orlando Magic plan to sign veteran guard Jevon Carter for the remainder of the season, agents Mark Bartelstein and Reggie Brown told ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Carter, 30, cleared waivers on Tuesday after the Chicago Bulls released him to create roster space for newly acquired forward Dario Saric. The eighth-year guard is now an unrestricted free agent.
Since entering the league as a 2018 second-round pick, Carter has appeared in 435 regular-season games with Memphis, Phoenix, Brooklyn, Milwaukee and Chicago. His most productive campaign came with the Bucks in 2022-23, when he started 39 of 81 contests and averaged career highs of 8.0 points, 2.4 assists and 2.5 rebounds.
That performance led to a three-year, $19.5 million deal with Chicago, but Carter saw limited minutes in a crowded Bulls backcourt this season. He logged 11.0 minutes per game over 23 appearances, producing 5.4 points on 39.8 percent shooting overall and 41.0 percent from three-point range.
Orlando’s only trade-deadline move sent guard Tyus Jones and his $7 million salary to the Charlotte Hornets along with two second-round picks. The deal moved the Magic roughly $1.4 million below the luxury-tax threshold and opened a second spot on the 15-man roster.
If Carter signs on Friday as expected, his prorated veteran minimum will count $871,000 against the cap, keeping Orlando under the tax while leaving one roster slot available. His actual salary for the rest of the year will be about $1.17 million, with the NBA reimbursing the difference between that figure and the cap charge.
