The Memphis Grizzlies enter the summer still searching for the spark that propelled them to 56 wins and the Western Conference’s No. 2 seed in 2021/22, when they matched a franchise record for victories and reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Golden State in six games.
Ja Morant headlined that run, capturing Most Improved Player honors in his third NBA season after averaging 27.4 points, 6.7 assists, 5.7 rebounds and 1.2 steals while shooting 49.3% from the field, 34.4% from three and 76.1% at the foul line. His breakout year also earned him a spot on the All-NBA Second Team.
Frontcourt anchor Jaren Jackson Jr. finished fifth in Defensive Player of the Year voting and was selected to the All-Defensive First Team for the first time. Sharpshooter Desmond Bane added 18.2 points per game on 43.6% three-point accuracy, along with 4.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.2 steals.
That roster featured reliable contributors Dillon Brooks, Steven Adams, De’Anthony Melton, Kyle Anderson and Brandon Clarke, and none of the club’s top 10 rotation players were older than 28.
Memphis followed the breakout season with 51 victories in 2022/23, yet momentum began to wane, setting the stage for a pivotal offseason as the franchise looks to recapture its recent peak.
