Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James said he can see the end of his playing days approaching, yet emphasized he is committed to the upcoming NBA season—and possibly another after that.

Speaking on the “360 With Speedy” podcast, the 40-year-old star conceded he is “on the other side of the hump,” but made clear he is not ready to step away. “I’m not about to play another 23 years, and I’m not about to play another 10,” James said. “Retirement is coming, it is coming. It’s just not here just yet.”

James is preparing for an unprecedented 23rd NBA campaign. Last season he appeared in 70 games and averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists, remaining one of the league’s most dependable performers.

The Lakers are counting on James to continue producing while Luka Dončić settles into his role as the franchise’s centerpiece. Los Angeles also added veterans Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart in the offseason, moves the team believes will keep it competitive in the Western Conference.

While acknowledging he is closer to the finish line than the starting line, James reiterated that he still has more basketball ahead. “I’m definitely gearing up to where the end is. I’m not there yet,” he said.
