With a June 29 deadline looming on LeBron James’ $51.4 million player option for 2024-25, several league insiders told Hoops Wire they still view the Los Angeles Lakers as the forward’s most logical destination should he enter free agency.
James, 39, can become an unrestricted free agent if he declines the option. While multiple teams are expected to gauge interest, sources cited by Hoops Wire said the Lakers’ ability to offer a maximum contract and their existing relationship with the four-time NBA champion make Los Angeles the “natural” landing spot.
James has spent the past six seasons with the Lakers, winning the 2020 NBA title and recently completing a campaign in which he averaged 25.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 8.3 assists. He is eligible for a three-year, $162 million deal if he opts out.
The Lakers finished 47-35 this season before falling to the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs. General manager Rob Pelinka has said re-signing James remains the franchise’s top offseason priority.
