Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, sidelined for the club’s first eight games, is preparing to advance to five-on-five, live action as part of his rehabilitation, ESPN’s Shams Charania said in a video report on Wednesday.
According to Charania, the 40-year-old forward has been limited to individual workouts but is now “ready for the next step,” which will involve full-court scrimmaging. James will remain in Southern California during the Lakers’ upcoming five-game road trip that begins in Atlanta this weekend, immediately after Wednesday night’s home matchup with the San Antonio Spurs.
Details on where the live sessions will take place are still being finalized. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported that the veteran could scrimmage with the South Bay Lakers, the organization’s G League affiliate that practices in El Segundo, California. Another option is for James to rejoin the NBA roster when it returns from the trip on November 15.
During an on-air conversation with Charania, ESPN’s Malika Andrews noted that the earliest possible date for James to suit up in a game would be November 18, when Los Angeles hosts the Utah Jazz.
Despite missing James—and guard Luka Dončić, who has been out for four of the first eight contests—the Lakers opened the season 6-2 heading into Wednesday’s meeting with San Antonio.
Once James appears in his next game, he will become the first player in league history to log a 23rd NBA season, McMenamin added.
