LOS ANGELES — LeBron James will enter unrestricted free agency this summer and has yet to decide whether he will re-sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, seek a reunion with the Cleveland Cavaliers, or end his NBA career, according to league sources.
People familiar with the situation told Lakers Daily’s Ashish Mathur that the Lakers have begun planning a roster centered on Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Even so, team and league insiders reportedly believe the organization would welcome James back if he chooses to keep playing.
Doncic and Reaves are said to support James’ return, and the trio maintains a productive off-court relationship despite periodic on-court chemistry issues.
Around the league, the prevailing view is straightforward: if the NBA’s all-time leading scorer postpones retirement, his most realistic destinations are another contract with Los Angeles or a third stint in Cleveland. The report adds that Cavaliers stars James Harden and Donovan Mitchell are expected to contact the four-time MVP about a possible homecoming.
James, 39, joined the Lakers in 2018 and led the franchise to the 2020 championship. He continues to produce at a high level as he approaches what would be his age-42 season.
