Windhorst: LeBron James Has 99% Chance to Rejoin Cavaliers If He Accepts Deep Pay Cut

LeBron James could be headed for a third stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers, but only if the four-time NBA champion agrees to sign for far below his market value, ESPN insider Brian Windhorst said on ESPN Cleveland.

“If he’s able and willing, and is willing to accept that money, I think it’s 99%,” Windhorst told the station, emphasizing that the Cavaliers can offer no more than a minimum contract or, at best, a deal built around the taxpayer mid-level exception.

Unrestricted free agency looms

James, 41, is finishing the current campaign with the Los Angeles Lakers while trying to keep the club in the Western Conference race alongside Luka Doncic. Once the season ends, the league’s all-time leading scorer will enter unrestricted free agency unless he chooses to retire—an option that remains on the table but is considered less likely.

Stat line shows continued impact

Despite his age, James continues to post All-Star numbers: 22.0 points, 7.1 assists and 5.8 rebounds on efficient two-point shooting. While his defensive output fluctuates, his playmaking remains elite, making him an attractive addition for contenders.

Cleveland’s stance

The Cavaliers, currently led by All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell, have limited cap flexibility after committing long-term money to their core. According to Windhorst, the front office would welcome James back but has little room to maneuver financially.

Mitchell publicly endorsed the possibility. “As a Bron fan, to be able to be a teammate, that would be special. It’s LeBron James,” he said.

Other rumored destinations

Windhorst noted that league insiders are also speculating about Golden State and San Antonio as potential landing spots should James decide to leave Los Angeles. However, he labeled Cleveland the most likely destination—provided the financial hurdles are cleared.

For now, James remains focused on the Lakers’ postseason push. His decision on whether—and where—to play next season is expected to dominate the offseason narrative.
