Final offers to join the NBA’s planned European competition, currently dubbed “NBA Europe,” must be submitted by the end of March. While the league reviews those bids, NBA officials are working to avoid a direct clash with the existing EuroLeague.
According to Eurohoops reporter Aris Barkas, the NBA, FIBA and EuroLeague executives are expected to meet within the next few days to discuss a potential joint venture that could field 24 teams. Interest in the project is described as strong, with most bidders coming from the United States, yet no applicant has been willing to commit the reported $500 million entry fee.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver said last Wednesday that a partnership with the EuroLeague would be the “ideal outcome,” citing his long-standing relationship with Chus Bueno, the EuroLeague’s newly appointed chief executive. Bueno spent 12 years at the NBA as vice president for Europe, Africa and the Middle East and also served as managing director of NBA Spain.
Silver told reporters that collaborating with both the EuroLeague and FIBA would allow for a “systematic approach to growing the game throughout Europe” while supporting the continent’s domestic leagues. Bueno has publicly indicated that the EuroLeague is open to exploring such cooperation.
Amid these talks, EuroLeague powerhouses Real Madrid and Fenerbahce are reportedly close to signing new 10-year licenses, a timeline that aligns with the upcoming three-party discussions.
