Memphis guard Ja Morant rejoined the lineup Sunday and powered the Grizzlies to a 126-109 win over the Orlando Magic, turning in one of his top outings of the season.
The 24-year-old became the first player in franchise history to post at least 20 points and 10 assists before halftime, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal. He closed the night with 24 points, 13 assists and 28 minutes of action.
Morant’s strong showing arrives amid months of trade speculation. Asked after the game whether the performance might boost his market value, the two-time All-Star stressed he wants to stay put. “I’m a very loyal guy,” Morant told reporters, noting a tattoo of the Grizzlies’ bear logo on his back as proof of his commitment to the club.
Veteran NBA writer Marc Stein reports that Memphis is listening to offers not because of Morant’s talent, but because injuries have limited his availability. The point guard has not appeared in seven consecutive games since the 2022/23 campaign and is recording career-worst marks in rim attacks and overall shooting this season.
Stein adds that the Grizzlies’ current overseas trip has fostered renewed chemistry, with Morant at the center of the positive atmosphere.
One potential suitor, the Miami Heat, remain reluctant to pursue Morant if it would hinder a future bid for Milwaukee star Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to Stein. Miami believes it is well positioned to make a run at Antetokounmpo should the two-time MVP seek a move, and prioritizes preserving trade assets for that scenario.
