Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland has resumed light on-court work and will participate in training camp on a limited basis as he continues to recover from June toe surgery, according to a report by Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.
“He looks good,” president of basketball operations Koby Altman told reporters Tuesday morning, noting the 25-year-old enjoyed “a really good offseason from a strength standpoint.”
While Garland has moved beyond weight-room activities, no formal timetable has been set for his full return. Team and league sources told Fedor the two-time All-Star may miss double-digit games to start the 2025-26 season.
Cleveland announced on June 9 that Garland’s status would be re-evaluated in four to five months. Roughly three and a half months have passed since that update, making an early-season absence unsurprising.
Garland averaged 20.6 points, 6.7 assists and 2.9 rebounds while shooting .472/.401/.878 in 30.7 minutes last season. A turf toe injury sidelined him for the final two games of the first-round series against Miami and the opening two contests of the Eastern Conference semifinals versus Indiana.
With Garland limited, Donovan Mitchell is expected to take on added ball-handling duties this fall. Point guards Lonzo Ball and Craig Porter Jr. are also set for larger roles until Garland returns.
The Cavaliers will be without another starter on opening night: forward Max Strus underwent foot surgery in August and is projected to miss at least three to four months.
