New Orleans — Two Western Conference rivals have contacted the New Orleans Pelicans about the availability of key forwards as the team endures a difficult season, league insider Chris Haynes reported.

According to Haynes, the Los Angeles Lakers have inquired about Herbert Jones, while the Golden State Warriors have reached out regarding Trey Murphy III. Both players remain under contract and, per the report, the Pelicans have set a high asking price.

New Orleans holds the worst record in the West at 5-22 but is not rushing into any deals. Team executives are said to be listening to offers rather than moving quickly.

Player profiles

Herbert Jones, 27
• Salary: $13.9 million this season
• Averages: 9.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists
• Reputation: versatile two-way wing and consistent perimeter defender

Trey Murphy III, 25
• Salary: $25 million this season
• Averages: 21.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists
• Reputation: efficient scorer from all areas of the floor

Why the interest

The Lakers, 18-7 and fourth in the conference, have struggled defensively, ranking near the bottom of the league in points allowed and defensive rating. Adding Jones would address perimeter defense concerns.

The Warriors, 13-14, continue to search for additional scoring to complement Stephen Curry. Murphy’s offensive versatility aligns with that need.

A tweet from Haynes on Dec. 15, 2025, noted that both clubs had made their calls, but no timeline for further talks was indicated.

For now, the Pelicans appear content to evaluate offers while navigating a challenging campaign.
