Lakers reportedly reopen talks to acquire Jazz center Walker Kessler

The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to resume conversations with the Utah Jazz about a potential trade for center Walker Kessler, according to a report from Lakers Daily.

League sources told the outlet that Utah continues to demand a substantial return. Any serious discussion, the report noted, would begin with guard Austin Reaves and multiple future first-round draft picks heading to Salt Lake City.

The target

Kessler, 24, appeared in 58 games last season, averaging 11.1 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks while shooting 66 percent from the field. He recorded 28 double-doubles and is widely regarded as one of the NBA’s most productive rim protectors.

The 7-footer is entering the final season of his rookie contract. The Athletic previously reported that player and team are not expected to reach an extension before the October deadline, positioning Kessler for restricted free agency in the summer of 2025.

Utah’s stance

The Jazz finished with a league-low 17 victories last season and are still evaluating how to structure their rebuild. Despite the uncertainty, the front office is said to be firm on asking for premium assets in any deal involving Kessler.

Lakers’ outlook

Los Angeles has already reshaped its frontcourt by adding Deandre Ayton this offseason. New head coach JJ Redick is expected to start Ayton alongside Luka Doncic, Reaves, Rui Hachimura and LeBron James. Even so, the franchise is reportedly eager to bolster its interior defense with another shot-blocking presence.

James, 40, has one year remaining on his contract before he can enter unrestricted free agency. With the championship window tied closely to his tenure, any major roster move carries heightened urgency for the Lakers.

For now, the team’s interest in Kessler remains strong, but it is unclear whether Los Angeles is willing to meet Utah’s steep asking price.
