Los Angeles — During the Lakers’ media day on Monday, forward LeBron James acknowledged that the finish line to his record-breaking NBA career is approaching, though he offered no exact timetable for retirement. The 40-year-old reiterated his longtime goal of sharing the league with son Bronny James but ruled out waiting for younger son Bryce James, now a freshman at Arizona. “I am not waiting on Bryce,” he said, emphasizing that his personal schedule may not align with his son’s.
James added that competing alongside a prime-aged Luka Dončić provides extra motivation, yet stressed that the final decision on when to retire will rest solely with him and his family.
Lakers Roster Updates
Austin Reaves confirmed he declined a four-year, $87 million extension earlier this offseason. The 27-year-old guard admitted he briefly feared the choice could prompt the Lakers to trade him. Reaves remains intent on staying in Los Angeles and could pursue a more lucrative contract in 2026 free agency; league insiders told The Athletic his next deal might exceed $35 million annually.
Newly acquired center Deandre Ayton called his move to Los Angeles “the biggest opportunity of my career,” repeatedly insisting he will not take it for granted. The former No. 1 overall pick has faced scrutiny regarding his competitiveness in recent seasons.
Forward Rui Hachimura and guard Marcus Smart each said starting status is secondary to overall playing time. With James, Dončić, Reaves and Ayton projected as starters, one opening remains in head coach Darvin Ham’s lineup. Hachimura noted his established chemistry with the starters but emphasized that minutes matter more than tip-off introductions.
Rookie forward Adou Thiero, selected in the second round, is dealing with knee swelling and has not been cleared for the start of training camp. A source told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin that Thiero’s rehabilitation is on schedule and he is expected to receive clearance within a week. The Arkansas product also missed Summer League after injuring the same knee late in his college career.
