NEW YORK — The NBA has issued a $50,000 fine to Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic for what the league labeled an “inappropriate and unprofessional gesture” directed at a referee during Sunday’s victory over the New York Knicks.
The incident took place in the third quarter at Madison Square Garden. After Knicks guard Landry Shamet poked the ball loose, Doncic tried to draw a charge on Mohamed Diawara in transition but was whistled for a blocking foul instead. While still on the floor, Doncic looked toward an official and rubbed his fingers together in a money-counting motion, prompting the league’s discipline.
Sunday’s penalty increases the All-Star’s total fines this season to $95,000, according to Sportsnet.
Doncic is also approaching the NBA’s suspension threshold for technical fouls. He has been assessed 15 technicals, one behind league leader Dillon Brooks of the Phoenix Suns. Under league rules, a 16th technical in the regular season results in an automatic one-game suspension without pay, with additional suspensions triggered after every two subsequent technicals.
