The Los Angeles Lakers have added longtime college coach Tony Bennett to their front-office staff, naming the former University of Virginia leader an NBA draft advisor, the team announced Wednesday.
General manager Rob Pelinka said in a statement he is “thrilled and honored” to welcome Bennett, citing the coach’s success at building culture and developing high-IQ players. Pelinka called Bennett “a valuable resource” for the club’s scouting and draft operation.
Extensive college résumé
Bennett, 55, spent 15 seasons at Virginia and compiled a 364-136 record. His tenure was highlighted by the 2019 NCAA championship, a run that featured future NBA players De’Andre Hunter, Ty Jerome and Jay Huff. Bennett earned Naismith College Coach of the Year honors twice and built a national reputation for defensive discipline and player development.
Part of broader front-office expansion
The hire aligns with controlling owner Mark Walter’s push for a deeper, more collaborative basketball operations department modeled after the Los Angeles Dodgers’ structure. Team officials indicated Bennett is expected to be one of several new voices added in the coming months.
Draft implications
Los Angeles currently projects to hold its own first-round pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, likely in the early 20s. The arrival of an experienced evaluator like Bennett gives the Lakers added expertise as they prepare for future talent decisions.
