The Los Angeles Lakers’ decision on whether to keep or trade LeBron James is becoming increasingly complex, according to a report from Hoops Wire. The dilemma intensified the moment the club paired James with recently acquired guard Luka Doncic, a combination that has highlighted both offensive redundancy and defensive shortcomings.

Entering Monday night, Los Angeles owned a 23-13 record and sat fifth in the Western Conference. Despite that position, the Lakers were the only top-eight team in either conference carrying a negative net rating (minus 0.7), placing them statistically closer to the Charlotte Hornets than to any title contender.

The record is buoyed by a 13-1 mark in “clutch” games—contests within five points during the final five minutes. While stars such as James and Doncic have routinely closed tight games, league observers question whether that success is sustainable in postseason play.

Lineups featuring James, Doncic and guard Austin Reaves have struggled on both ends. Offensively, the trio ranks near the league’s bottom tier, and defensively it performs at a level comparable to a nine-win New Orleans Pelicans squad, according to the report.

Front-office attempts to shore up the roster have produced limited results. Center Deandre Ayton has not provided the expected defensive boost, and veteran guard Marcus Smart has publicly pointed to an overall lack of urgency as a primary issue.

Trading James remains difficult. The 41-year-old holds a no-trade clause, is earning an expiring $52.6 million this season, and would require a partner that believes he is the final piece to a championship puzzle while still meeting Los Angeles’ asking price. The alternative is to build fully around Doncic, allow James to play out his contract, and either watch him depart in free agency or negotiate a mutual separation.

With dual timelines proving ineffective, the organization faces mounting pressure to choose a definitive direction for the remainder of the season and beyond.
