The NBA’s Rookie of the Year conversation has narrowed to a pair of familiar faces from Duke University, turning the award race into a duel between Dallas Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg and Charlotte Hornets guard Kon Knueppel.

Flagg, selected by Dallas with hopes of anchoring the franchise’s next era, has delivered on preseason expectations. The 6-foot-9 forward is logging heavy minutes, producing on both ends of the floor and shouldering one of the league’s larger rookie workloads.

Knueppel’s path in Charlotte looks different. Instead of headlining the offense, the first-year sharpshooter has thrived in a complementary role. His efficient shooting, off-ball movement and low turnover rate have helped a Hornets club still jockeying for a postseason berth.

Former All-Star Jeff Teague added fuel to the debate during a recent episode of his Club 520 podcast, siding with Knueppel. “Cooper Flagg’s having a phenomenal rookie year, but it comes with a lot of opportunity,” Teague said. “Kon’s year is better because he’s with some gunners, and he’s not supposed to be doing what he’s doing.”

The context of team success also factors in. Charlotte remains in the playoff hunt, while Dallas sits outside the postseason picture, a contrast likely to influence award voters.

Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe and other first-year players continue to post strong seasons, yet the conversation around the hardware has largely become a two-man discussion. With contrasting roles, identical college roots and one trophy at stake, the Flagg-Knueppel contest appears set to dominate the season’s final stretch.
