The New York Knicks and free agent guard Malcolm Brogdon have agreed to a one-year contract, agent Sam Permut told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Friday.
League sources confirmed the deal is non-guaranteed, giving Brogdon a chance to compete with fellow veterans Landry Shamet and Garrison Mathews for the final standard roster spot when training camp opens.
Roster and cap implications
New York is operating just below the NBA’s second-apron hard cap and can carry only one minimum-salary veteran into the regular season unless salary is moved in a trade or buyout. All three guards are expected to sign contracts containing Exhibit 9 language, meaning they will not count against the cap until they make the opening-night roster and the club will be protected in case of a preseason injury.
Brogdon’s track record
Brogdon, who turns 33 in December, enters his 10th NBA season with career averages of 15.3 points, 4.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds while shooting 46.3 percent from the field, 38.8 percent from three and 87.4 percent from the line. He was the 2017 Rookie of the Year with Milwaukee and the 2023 Sixth Man of the Year in Boston.
The veteran guard spent last season with the Washington Wizards after trades from the Celtics to Portland and then to Washington. He appeared in 24 games for the Wizards, averaging 12.7 points, 4.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds in 23.5 minutes before an ankle sprain ended his year after the All-Star break.
Injuries have been a recurring concern; Brogdon has missed 249 of a possible 637 regular-season games since entering the league in 2016, topping 56 appearances only twice.
Knicks’ current roster
The Knicks now have 12 players on guaranteed standard contracts. They have room to add one veteran minimum contract and one rookie minimum deal while staying under the second apron.
Brogdon, Shamet and Mathews are expected to receive strong consideration for that lone veteran slot as New York finalizes its roster ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.
