Knicks Set to Add Jeremy Sochan After Waiver Clearance

The New York Knicks intend to sign forward Jeremy Sochan once he clears waivers, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, moving quickly to fortify their roster ahead of the postseason.

New York opened the necessary cap room last week, dropping from just below the NBA’s second tax apron to approximately $1.1 million under it, ESPN cap analyst Bobby Marks reported. That space is expected to accommodate a prorated veteran-minimum contract for Sochan, who would be eligible for the playoffs if the agreement is finalized before March 1.

The San Antonio Spurs waived the 2022 No. 9 overall pick on Thursday by mutual consent after he fell out of the rotation in December. Although 10 teams expressed interest once the 20-year-old hit waivers, his $7.1 million expiring salary made a claim impractical, paving the way for free agency.

Sochan started 149 games across his first three NBA seasons, logging 27.3 minutes per night and earning a reputation for energy, versatility and defensive toughness. While his perimeter shot remains inconsistent, the Knicks are focused on his ability to guard multiple positions and withstand playoff matchups.

New York, currently pressing for a deeper postseason run, views the 6-foot-9 forward as an immediate depth piece who can inject additional edge into head coach Tom Thibodeau’s rotation.
