The Chicago Bulls have agreed to acquire forward Guerschon Yabusele from the New York Knicks in exchange for guard Dalen Terry, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
New York had been trying to move Yabusele for several weeks because of his $5.7 million player option for next season. Chicago opted to take on the contract, betting the 30-year-old can regain the form he showed last season in Philadelphia before struggling with the Knicks.
Speculation that Yabusele might return to Europe—where he starred for five seasons—appears to be on hold with the move to Chicago. He averaged just 8.9 minutes across 41 games for the Knicks but is expected to play a larger role in the Bulls’ reconfigured frontcourt. Chicago has lacked size all season and sent starting center Nikola Vučević to Boston earlier this week.
The Knicks shave a small amount from the payroll by swapping Yabusele’s $5.5 million salary for Terry’s $5.4 million figure. Terry, 23, is in the final year of his rookie deal and is on track for restricted free agency this summer. Selected 18th overall in the 2022 draft, he never secured a regular rotation spot during four years in Chicago.
Cap expert Yossi Gozlan calculates that the trade increases New York’s room below the second apron from $148,359 to $249,241, giving the club flexibility to sign a 15th player on March 26 instead of April 2. The Knicks can still move Terry before Thursday’s deadline, and his expiring contract may attract more interest than the remaining money on Yabusele’s deal.
