The New York Knicks are working to secure spots for guards Malcolm Brogdon and Landry Shamet on their 15-man roster for opening night, league sources told the New York Post.
New York is up against the NBA’s second tax apron, capped at $207.8 million, and currently has room for only one veteran minimum contract. To keep both players, the front office would need to complete a trade that frees additional salary.
Brogdon and Shamet signed non-guaranteed deals earlier this month, joining Garrison Mathews, Matt Ryan and Alex Len in competition for the final roster slot. According to the report, Brogdon and Shamet declined other offers, suggesting confidence they will remain with the Knicks.
Team officials could let the battle run deep into training camp. That approach would allow them to monitor Brogdon’s health after he appeared in just 24 games for the Washington Wizards last season, while also giving Mathews, Ryan and Len a chance to earn a role.
Miles McBride is viewed around the league as a potential trade candidate. The 23-year-old averaged 24.9 minutes last season but faces a crowded backcourt featuring Jalen Brunson, Miles Bridges, newcomer Jordan Clarkson and potentially both Brogdon and Shamet. McBride becomes extension-eligible next summer and could reach unrestricted free agency in 2027, a timeline that may tighten future cap flexibility for a club already carrying several long-term deals.
Rookie wing Pacome Dadiet and second-round guard Tyler Kolek are additional possibilities to be moved. New York values Dadiet’s upside as its 2024 first-round pick, while Kolek’s $2,191,897 salary would create less cap relief and offers limited trade appeal.
The Knicks have not set a timetable for completing a deal, but any transaction must occur before the regular season to keep both veterans on guaranteed contracts.
