The New York Knicks have reached a non-guaranteed, one-year agreement with veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon, agent Sam Permut told ESPN’s Shams Charania.
SNY’s Ian Begley confirmed that the deal will send Brogdon, who turns 33 in December, to training camp to compete with Landry Shamet and Garrison Mathews for what is expected to be the club’s final veteran roster spot. Because New York is operating under second-apron restrictions, only one of the three can remain on a veteran minimum contract unless the front office frees additional salary.
Brogdon, the NBA’s 2017 Rookie of the Year, has previously played for Milwaukee, Indiana, Boston and Portland before finishing last season in Washington. In 24 appearances with the Wizards, he averaged 12.7 points, 4.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds before an ankle sprain sidelined him after the All-Star break.
Durability has been a lingering concern: Brogdon has missed 249 of 637 possible regular-season games over his career. Even so, he owns lifetime averages of 15.3 points and nearly five assists per outing on efficient shooting splits.
The Knicks currently have 12 guaranteed contracts and room for one veteran and one rookie minimum slot. Training camp will determine whether Brogdon, Shamet or Mathews secures the final veteran position.
