Veteran shooting guard Klay Thompson would prefer to join a championship-level team if the Dallas Mavericks begin fielding trade offers for him, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported.
The Mavericks, off to a 9-16 start, are reportedly willing to discuss several established players—including Thompson, Anthony Davis, D’Angelo Russell and Daniel Gafford—as the front office reassesses its direction.
Thompson, 35, signed a three-year, $50 million contract with Dallas in July 2024, expecting to compete for another NBA Finals berth alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. With Doncic no longer on the roster and the team sitting below .500, multiple clubs understand the four-time champion is interested in a more competitive situation for the final two seasons of his deal.
Through 23 games this season, the five-time All-Star is averaging 11 points while shooting 35 percent from three-point range. His top performance came on Nov. 29, when he scored 23 points against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Thompson does not possess a no-trade clause, and his $18 million cap hit for 2025 could appeal to playoff contenders seeking additional shooting and postseason experience.
