Veteran point guard Russell Westbrook and the Sacramento Kings continue to show “strong mutual interest” in a possible deal, according to ESPN insider Shams Charania.
Charania told NBA Today that Sacramento is still looking for a reserve floor general and views Westbrook as a potential solution. The Kings finished last season ranked 29th in both bench points and bench assists.
Team Connections
Westbrook, who turns 37 next month, already has relationships within the organization. He previously played with current Kings center Domantas Sabonis and has ties to Dennis Schröder, DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine. New assistant general manager B.J. Armstrong knows Westbrook from the agency side, and the former MVP also holds the respect of newly hired general manager Scott Perry and head coach Doug Christie, Charania said.
Status and Recent Performance
Two weeks into the preseason, Westbrook remains unsigned. Last year with the Denver Nuggets he appeared in 75 games, averaging 13.3 points, 6.1 assists and 4.9 rebounds.
Journeyman Stretch
Since 2019, Westbrook has suited up for the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and Nuggets. He was also traded to the Utah Jazz and waived twice during that span.
Whether an agreement with Sacramento is reached before opening night or later in the campaign remains undecided.
