The Sacramento Kings remain focused on acquiring Golden State Warriors restricted free-agent forward Jonathan Kuminga in a sign-and-trade, according to multiple league reports.
Sam Amick of The Athletic reported that Sacramento has emerged as the “most serious” bidder and has held off on smaller transactions while it attempts to finalize a package for the 22-year-old forward. If the effort falls short, the franchise is expected to turn its attention to veteran guard Russell Westbrook, Amick added.
NBA insider Jake Fischer of The Stein Line echoed that sequence, noting that the Kings have maintained interest in Westbrook for several weeks but prefer to clear a backcourt slot before committing to the former MVP.
Devin Carter Floated in Talks
League chatter indicates Sacramento could part with second-year guard Devin Carter, the No. 13 selection in last year’s draft and a pick made by former general manager Monte McNair. Fischer reported that Carter’s name has already surfaced in discussions with Golden State, though the Warriors have yet to engage.
Carter flashed in five G League outings for Stockton, averaging 26.6 points, 9.4 rebounds and 5.4 assists, but shoulder issues limited him to 36 NBA games with modest production during his rookie campaign.
Contract Standoff in Golden State
Kuminga and the Warriors are locked in a negotiation described by Amick as “borderline contentious.” Golden State’s current offer stands at two years and $45 million, with a team option for the 2026-27 season. Kuminga, who posted a confident Instagram message this week, could choose to sign his one-year, $8 million qualifying offer, positioning himself for unrestricted free agency in 2026.
Key dates loom over the talks: training camp opens in mid-September, and the deadline to sign the qualifying offer falls on Oct. 1. Until then, Sacramento and Golden State remain in a holding pattern.
